Make Your Own Headboards!
If you're like us, you probably would like to save some dough and put a personal stamp on your home at the same time. Here are
a couple simple, high-style projects to try this weekend.
Blue Bed
Plain-jane closet doors never looked so good! You'll need three of these 20x80-inch hollow-core pine doors, which cost about
$30 each at home centers, for a full-size bed. Paint the doors with primer, and let dry. Using a T-square and a pencil, mark
lines on the doors to create the stripes. Vary the widths from 2 inches to 24 inches on each door, and make each door
different. Assign every stripe a different paint color, such as "L" for light blue or "W" for white, and mark them accordingly.
Use blue painter's tape, which peels off without marring the primer, to mask off all the stripes of one color. Apply paint to
the stripes, and let dry. Repeat the process for each color.
That curtain something
We're hooked on this idea for hanging store-bought curtains on the wall behind the bed. Snag the silver-color hooks (about $5
each) from the hardware store, and the 84-inch-long curtain panels from a home store. Add 12 inches to the width of your bed
to get the width of the headboard treatment; to get the height, measure up from the floor the length of your curtains, plus
the ties and hooks. (If the curtains have tab tops, they will be included in the overall length. We sewed on ribbon ties and,
therefore, added their length.) Mark spots for hooks every 10-12 inches. Screw in hooks and hang the curtains. Center the bed
against the treatment.
